One of the most remote and wild places on our planet, the Congo is the world's second-largest rainforest after the Amazon and is home to more than 400 species of mammals, 10,000 species of plant and 1,000 bird species. It's also one of the last remaining places where you can see endangered western lowland gorillas and forest elephants in their natural habitat. The Republic of the Congo, a small, peaceful nation that straddles the equator in Central Africa, is bordered by Gabon and Cameroon and is more than 60% rainforest and home to a selection of spectacular forest lodges. We also venture to the far south of the Central African Republic to the magnificent Dzangha Sangha Special Reserve and the legendary Sangha Lodge.
The colourful capital of the Republic of the Congo offers an immersion into Congolese culture and is worth spending time exploring, discovering its architecture, markets and riverfront restaurants. This is the home of the "sapeurs" - a fascinating group of street fashion afficionados who express themselves through flamboyant dress and exaggerated mannerisms.
A lush landscape of ancient rainforest that harbours more than 4,400 species of plant and more than 100 mammal species - including the western lowland gorilla - Odzala Kokoua is one of Africa's oldest parks and has been protected since 1935. You can also see chimps here, as well as forest elephant, forest buffalo and the curious bongo antelope, among others.
A pristine wilderness that has had minimal human contact, this part offers an immersive "jungle" experience and is one of the only undeveloped wilderness areas in Africa. This UNESCO World Heritage Site adjoins the Sangha River and is interrupted by breathtaking "bais" - clearings in the forest where animals gather en masse to feed and drink mineral-rich water.
Located on its own concession in the Central African Republic's Dzangha Sangha Special Reserve with direct access to Dzangha Bai - where hundreds of forest elephants gather each day - Sangha Lodge is one of the most remote and authentic destinations in the Congo, where you can meet the indigenous Ba'aka people and learn more about their culture.

The Congo's long dry season from May to September each year is the best time to visit when the temperatures are cooler and the weather a lot drier. Because of its equatorial climate, the Congo remains humid all year round but humidity levels in the long dry season are at their lowest. August is widely regarded as being the peak season. October is the start of the long rainy season which drenches everything in the forest until the end of December, but it's also the best time for birding with regular sightings of African grey parrots and great blue turacos. November and December are hot and extremely humid (and wet) making for very muddy conditions. January and February are also humid but with less rainfall but most of the Congo is covered in cloud during this period and it's a good time to see gorillas. March and April bring the short rainy season with good chances of rain virtually every day. It's also very hot at this time of year.
