The best times to visit Rwanda
Rwanda doesn't have the typical four seasons of spring, summer, fall, and winter. Sitting near the equator, it has a tropical climate with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons. The long rainy season stretches from March to May. This is the wettest time of year, with frequent and sometimes heavy rain. Following the long rains comes the long dry season, from June to September. This is the peak tourist time as skies are clear, with sunshine and little rain. A shorter rainy season arrives in October and November, with lighter showers. December to February is the short dry season, offering another good window for travel with pleasant sunshine and dry trails.
When it comes to gorilla trekking and wildlife viewing with clear skies and dry trails, June to September and December to February are ideal. In the shoulder months of March to May and November you might encounter some rain showers, but they're usually brief and the trails dry quickly. Rwanda's mountainous terrain means temperatures vary by elevation, but overall the climate is temperate year-round thanks to its high altitude. Pack for changeable weather, including rain gear, sun protection, and sturdy hiking boots.
