The best times to visit South Africa

South Africa's climate varies significantly due to its vast size and diverse landscapes. Generally, the country enjoys a temperate climate with plenty of sunshine throughout the year. Coastal regions experience more moderate temperatures, while the interior can be more extreme, with hot summers and cold winters.

From a safari perspective, while many consider the best time to visit South Africa to be during the dry winter months from June to August, when the weather is cooler, game viewing is largely great all year-round. The green season (December to April) is spectacular, especially for birding, although it's warmer and more humid - especially along the coastline. This is when baby animals are plentiful and you'll see a high number of kills by predators.

Spring (September to November) is when migratory birds arrive and the temperatures build up till the first rains fall and Autumn (March to May) is a great time of year when temperatures are more moderate, rainfall less and the landscapes still green.

If you want to catch the southern right whales calving on the Western and Eastern Cape coastline, June to November is the whale season.

Summer: December to February.

Hot and humid, especially in the coastal areas, with afternoon thunderstorms common in the interior.

Autumn: March to May.

Cooler temperatures with less rainfall, making it a pleasant time to visit.

Winter: June to August.

Dry and cool in the interior, warm sunny days and cool evenings in the Kruger Park region and often stormy weather on the Western Cape coastline.

Spring: September to November.

Warmer temperatures and blooming flora, perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing.
