Tucked away in Southern Africa, this landlocked country offers a captivating blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and a relaxed pace. Lake Malawi - known as "the lake of stars" - dominates the landscape. This freshwater giant is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasting the largest number of fish species of any lake in the world. Beyond the water, mountains rise majestically, offering trekking adventures and panoramic vistas. Wildlife enthusiasts can explore national parks teeming with elephants, lions, and zebras. Malawi's true charm lies in its people. Warm and welcoming, they are known for their vibrant artistic traditions and infectious love of music. If you're searching for an authentic African experience, far from the madding crowds, Malawi is waiting to be discovered.
Malawi's capital, Lilongwe, is a relaxed city divided into two distinct areas - New Town, with its smart hotels and embassies and Old Town, the livelier side, where you'll find the central market, bustling cafés, and interesting shops. It's worth spending a day to explore the markets on Malangalanga Road, browse Indian spice shops, or visit the wildlife rescue centre in between New Town and Old Town.
Lake Malawi is the country's beating heart. Crystal-clear waters and colourful fish make it a snorkeller's and diver's paradise. But the lake's true charm lies in relaxation. Imagine unwinding on sandy beaches, book in hand, while the water shimmers. Choose from rustic lodges near fishing villages or exclusive private islands for an unforgettable escape. Kayak the shallows or head out in a speedboat to explore further afield.
If you want to spot big game in Malawi, then Liwonde National Park is your answer. Here in this beautiful wilderness, elephants, antelope, and a dazzling array of birds await. The topography of Malawi is a little different from that of its neighbours thanks to towering mountain peaks and a giant lake! The rule of thumb is higher the altitude, the colder it gets, so the tea plantations and the northern parks can be chilly in winter and may even experience frost. The lake stays warm all year round so diving, snorkelling and swimming can be enjoyed no matter what the time of year. The rainy season lasts from December to May, with June to August being regarded as winter and the dry season. The temperatures begin to surge between September and November in readiness for the rains.
Summer: December to March
Autumn: April to June
Winter: July to September
Spring: October to November
